Top 10 Nursing Topics Frequently Tested in NMCN Exams

Optimize your study time by focusing on the topics that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria loves to test. Here is our data-backed list of high-yield areas.

Study Smart, Not Just Hard

With thousands of pages in your nursing textbooks, it is impossible to cram everything. By analyzing years of past questions and current nursing trends in Nigeria, we have identified the top areas you must master before stepping into the exam hall.

1. Malaria Management and Protocols

Given our endemic region, the NMCN heavily tests the current national guidelines for the treatment of uncomplicated and severe malaria, particularly the use of ACTs and intravenous artesunate.

2. Maternal Hemorrhage

Postpartum hemorrhage remains a leading cause of maternal mortality. Expect questions on the active management of the third stage of labor, identifying atonic uterus, and the administration sequence of oxytocics.

3. Immunization Schedules (NPI)

You must know the National Programme on Immunization (NPI) schedule by heart. Know which vaccines are given at birth, 6 weeks, 10 weeks, 14 weeks, and 9 months, including their dosages and routes of administration.

4. Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)

Especially post-COVID-19 and amidst recurrent Lassa fever outbreaks, standard precautions, isolation protocols, and proper donning/doffing of PPE are guaranteed test areas.

5. Fluid and Electrolyte Imbalance

Questions requiring you to calculate IV drip rates and identify signs of dehydration or specific electrolyte imbalances (like hypokalemia) are staple items on the CBT.

Note: While these topics are high-yield, they are not exhaustive. Make sure to use CouncilPrep's comprehensive study library to cover all bases.
